Edvard Munch: 5 times The Scream

How many versions of “The Scream” are there and which one is sold? Read the whole story:

The Norwegian painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944) did several versions of “The Scream,” an alter image for himself (more on this later), in oil, pastel,and litohgraph between 1893 and 1910.

Stolen in 1994 on 22nd February; recovered on 7th May 1994

1893 | Crayon on Cardboard | The Munch Museum

Stolen in 2004 on August 22nd; recovered on  31st August 2006

The scream 1895 | Pastel on cardboard | Privately owned | sold for 120.000.000 NY May 2, 2012

Dating from 1895, The Scream offered by Sotheby’s is done in pastel and is the only one in which one of the two figures in the background turns to look outward.

1910 | The Munch Museum | Tempera on Card Board

This version, executed in 1910 in tempera on cardboard, was stolen from the Munch Museum in 2004, and recovered in 2006.
